Dr. Carol Bowen-Wells

Board-certified General Surgeon

Dr. Bowen-Wells is a board-certified general surgeon and a fellowship-trained certified surgical oncologist. Over the years during her surgical calls, she noticed an increase in the number of patients presenting with severe wounds. Being a woman of faith, she prayed for the ability to successfully treat those patients and made it her mission to learn as much as she could about wounds so that she could employ and develop the most effective and efficient therapies. As with oncology, she utilizes a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to treat wound patients. Dr. Bowen-Wells recognized early the physical and emotional debilitation created by severe non-healing wounds and wanted her patients to heal so that they could return to a normal life. Dr. Bowen-Wells was equally motivated to ensure fewer amputations and more closure and limb salvage. She became board certified in wound care and remains one of few such certified practitioners in the Jacksonville region.

As a highly skilled surgeon, Dr. Bowen-Wells would utilize her specialized training to assist the patient with wound closure. She incorporates both surgical and non-surgical techniques to obtain the best results and motivates and encourages patients during treatment especially given the fact that her patients are usually referred to her after receiving many failed treatments and are at the point of giving up. She treats her patients with compassion and empathy. Dr. Bowen-Wells treats diabetic foot ulcers, venous ulcers, chronic, acute, non-healing surgical wounds, and pressure ulcers/injuries.

She has had many important breakthroughs in medical research over the years and has won many commendations and awards. Her research in liver cancer won her several competitions including the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Surgeon Research Competition for two consecutive years and similarly won the first annual competition at the University of Virginia.

Dr. Bowen-Wells is similarly trained in medical aesthetics, performing procedures including liposuction, laser therapy, and placement of bioidentical hormones. Dr. Bowen-Wells believes that one’s age need not be reflected in one’s appearance and in the way one feels. She believes that with a comprehensive and results-focused approach that one should be able to continue with the lifestyle and hobbies they have come to enjoy and to do them with less pain and aches.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Bowen-Wells enjoys spending time with her husband and family, traveling, hiking, singing, and being active in her church. She also volunteers as a sideline physician at the annual Bob Hayes Invitational and goes on medical missions to Jamaica performing wound care and general surgery procedures.
